There aren’t many places with a history like Rhodes. So, if you ever get a chance, this is a place you must visit. While standing on the island, you can trace its history by to 5000BC. Equally important, you can wonder around ruins from the Romans, Crusades and Ottoman Empire within the walls of a castle! Nevertheless, I love this place. Before we get to pictures, here’s a quick rundown of their history:
- 5000 BC: Neolithic settlements on island.
- 1700 BC: Settlement of Minoans.
- 1500 BC: Mycenaean domination of island.
- 480 BC: The Rhodians take part in the naval battle of Salamina, on the side of the Persians.
- 478 BC: Rhodes joins the Athenian League.
- 408 BC: Foundation of the city of Rhodes.
- 58 AD: Saint Paul brings Christianity to the island
- 297 AD: The island of Rhodes becomes part of the Island Province of the Roman Empire.
- 654 AD: Occupation of the city of Rhodes by the Arab Moawiyah.
- 11th cent.: Byzantium concedes commercial privileges to the Venetians.
- 1261: The Byzantines concede the island as a fiefdom to various Genovese nobles.
- 1309: Rhodes is ruled by the Order of Knights.
- 1522-1912: Rhodes is captured by the Ottoman Empire.
- 1912-1945: Period of Italian rule.
- 1945-1947: Rhodes under British administration.
- 1947: Union with Greece.
- 2008: Rhodes City Celebrates it’s 2400th anniversary.
