Jenny and I both agree there is never a good time for vacation… These days our demanding work load, personal and professional commitments and challenging economy make it tough to “get away!’ We had a fantastic Greek adventure with great sights, tastes and memories. As always, we would wish for more time together in such a beautiful country.

To say we ate well is an understatement. Throughout our trip, we ate fresh fish, tried new exotic foods, and sampled different interpretations of classic dishes.

All food is expensive in Greece. The Euro has distorted prices in Greece and created export demand for many of Greece’s staple products like fish, meat, even produce. Fresh fish is typically sold at 30-60E/kilo in Athens and the islands. Convert that to US Dollars and we pay dramatically less for much higher quality fish. [Read more…]

We came to Paros to relax after a long trip… We relaxed for 20 minutes yesterday and decided to hit the roads, path, or anything our 120cc motors would traverse.

In general, Paros isn’t a huge tourist destination. Apart from a few nightclubs, the beaches are spectacular and there are any notable ruins. However, the natural beauty and simplicity of life here make up for it. This is the type of place where life actually does slow down! The people are friendly and have perfected the work-life balance. While you won’t see many ultra-sheek possessions (excluding a few nice yachts in the harbor), people work and play here.

On my last trip to Santorini, I ate at Mama’s House restaurant… It was an experience! Mama cooks all-American breakfasts (a nice change when you’ve spent some time in Greece). And, Mama is a character!

I am happy to report Mama is doing well and has moved into a new place in Fira’s main square. Mama is as spunky as ever and yelled, “why you don’t give Mama a hug” when we first arrived.

After a three-hour boat tour, we arrived in Paros and made our way to Naoussa (pronounced Now-sa).

We’re staying at the Hotel Senia and its fantastic/beautiful/relaxing/romantic/modern… Two added benefits, the jacuzzi is amazing and their internet is super fast (note: in Athens, Rhodes, and Santorini our hotels provided sloooooooooow internet).

Sunsets in Santorini are unbelievable. Tonight, we took a couple of pictures of the sunset from our balcony. The Hotel Galini offers some amazing balconies and views. Seriously, there’s nothing better than a bottle of wine, a nice breeze and balcony hanging off a cliff.

We spent the early afternoon at one of Greece’s most famous wineries, Boutari. There are many wineries in Greece, but many produce too little to export or even sell outside of their local market… When traveling, go with an open palate – much of what you sample may not be available anyplace else on earth
Future Travel Note: When ordering red wines, remember that Greek’s like them “mild sweet.” As a dry red wine lover (Cab, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Malbec), these wines more resemble desert wines similiar to Port. It was difficult to find a dry red during our travels.
