MD Anderson Ranks #1 in Cancer Care

by Kirk Pozadzides on July 15, 2009

Congratulations to our friends (and my wife) at MD Anderson for ranking #1 for Cancer Care. Forgive me for being a proud husband, but you might remember Jenny was accepted and just started as a fellow in MD Anderson’s Oncology and Hematology department(s).

I am honored to share with you the news that M. D. Anderson has once again ranked No. 1 in cancer care in U.S. News & World Report’s “America’s Best Hospitals” annual survey.

This is very visible national recognition of the terrific work our employees and volunteers do every day to support our outstanding patient care, as well as the research, education and prevention endeavors that contribute so much to our prominence.
We have achieved the top ranking six of the last eight years, and we have been first or second in cancer care every year since the survey’s inception in 1990.

Several M. D. Anderson subspecialties* also are ranked among the best in the nation:
Ear Nose and Throat – No. 2
Urology – No. 9
Gynecology – No. 12
Digestive Disorders – No. 23
Diabetes and Endocrine Disorders – No. 41

In a separate survey of pediatric hospitals published by U.S. News & World Report in June, our Children’s Cancer Hospital was ranked No. 13 in the nation. This is a jump of eight spots from last year.
Rankings are based on a reputation survey of board-certified hematologists and oncologists around the nation, nurse-to-patient ratios and Magnet Status, some patient outcomes data, and several advanced technologies and services available to patients and the community.

I applaud you for all that you do every day, and I thank you for remaining committed to our core values. We’re here for the same reason – and that is to serve the best interests of our courageous patients, in whatever capacity we can.
Congratulations to everyone in the M. D. Anderson family for achieving this recognition of our excellence and accomplishments. Let’s keep Making Cancer History together.

John Mendelsohn, M.D.
President

Jenny Accepted To MD Anderson

by Kirk Pozadzides on June 18, 2008

Today, we received fantastic news…

For those of you not in the medical world, here’s a quick tutorial: Every doctor attends four years of medical school. In the 4th year of medical school, students must decide which field of medicine (specialty) to practice. Each medical field requires a residency (a training period) of 3 or more years. Afterwards, if the doctor wants to specialize, they apply for a fellowship (and subspecialize)!

Entrance into residency and fellowships programs follow the same path… Candidates must interview for the programs. This is where the “Match” comes in.

The “Match” is run like a computer matching game. After completing the interview process, the candidates (either med students or residents) submits their ranked list of programs. At the same time, the programs rank the candidates that they prefer. On “Match” day, the program tells you if/where the candidate has been accepted!

So, what’s the good news? Today (Match Day), Jenny was accepted into Hematology/Oncology Fellowship at the #1 ranked MD Anderson. Jenny’s hard work, dedication, commitment to patient care, and pure love of medicine made this possible! In the end, Jenny will be Boarded in Internal Medicine, Oncology and Hematology. She will be a cancer killing machine!

What does this mean for us? Jenny will keep getting smarter, I will inevitably become dumber, we’ll start our future family, and continue enjoying our #1 ranked city, Houston!
